CHATTER PDX: MOZART TO MODERN

CHATTER PDX: MOZART TO MODERN
Friday, June 19, 2026
7:00 PM | Reserved Seating
$20 . $10 . $5

The Liberty Theatre proudly presents a unique and unforgettable classical chamber music experience with Chatter PDX.

The evening centers on Mozart’s Serenade No. 10 in B-flat major, K. 361 — the iconic Gran Partita. One of the most celebrated works ever written for wind ensemble, the Gran Partita unfolds across seven expansive movements. Scored for an extraordinary ensemble of 13 instruments—featuring pairs of oboes, clarinets, basset horns, bassoons, four horns, and double bass—this expansive and richly textured work is celebrated as one of the greatest achievements in wind chamber music.

The program also features Mozart’s Adagio in B-flat major, K. 411, A serene and deeply expressive work. This lesser-known Mozart gem highlights the rich, mellow tones of clarinets and basset horns. Its graceful lines and warm harmonies create an intimate, almost vocal quality that draws listeners into a moment of quiet reflection.

Two contemporary works round out the evening:
  • Loud Ciphers by Timo Andres (arranged for four clarinets) is a playful, rhythmically intricate exploration of shifting patterns and interlocking voices.
  • This Has Happened Before by Christopher Fox, written for four bass clarinets and rich with deep, resonant textures.

A special intermission performance in the McTavish Room will feature 101 metronomes in celebration of the Liberty's 101st anniversary and Chatter PDX's 101st performance. One hundred and one metronomes. Ten performers. A single, unfolding experience. In this rare recreation of György Ligeti’s Poème symphonique (1962), the McTavish Room becomes a living sculpture of sound. The performers wind and set each metronome to a different tempo, then step away—leaving the audience inside a shifting constellation of ticks, pulses, and patterns.

Following the concert, guests are invited to a meet-and-greet reception with drink specials in the Lower Lobby.

Doors open at 6:00 PM. Come early to pick up drinks and snacks from the Lower Lobby to enjoy at your seat.
