COLUMBIA RIVER SYMPHONY PRESENTS

COLUMBIA RIVER SYMPHONY PRESENTS
ASTORIA REGATTA SUMMER POPS
Saturday, August 10th, 2024
7:00 pm, General Admission, FREE

The Columbia River Symphony (Led by conductor Cory Pederson) presents a multimedia experience concert!

In honor of the Regatta festivities, the Columbia River Symphony shares a symphonic story through exciting popular music  & engaging storytelling, all alongside a visual showcase helping to bring the story home to our audiences and musicians alike.  The full symphony orchestra will perform popular selections from such films as “Jurassic World,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “Star Trek,” and popular arrangements of “We are the World" and “Sunrise” from Also Sprach Zarathustra, and many more.  Although these selections will be instantly recognizable, they'll be performed to a special story put together for this Regatta-themed concert.

This family story centers around a young boy growing up in the quaint town of Astoria, Oregon, nestled along the banks of the mighty Columbia River.  Through his years of watching the boats flow past his home he built a passion for all sorts of nautical vessels.  One summer, he decided to enter into the annual Regatta boat race, and the excitement of preparing for such a monumental race set him on a path to an unforgettable story.  Through the various art mediums of music, story and visual presentation, enjoy the adventure of a young boy who rises to the challenges of growing up and learning about himself in the process. With the multitude of emotions that life brings forth, the young man learns about the strengths of being a sailor, and the importance of grit and resilience, as he battles the relentless challenges of the river, his opponents, and sometimes even himself. Hear the percussive roars of the symphony’s drums and cymbals clashing, the exuberant fanfares of the fierce brasswinds, the shrieking sounds of the woodwinds emulating the river currents, and the melodic beauty of the strings exhibiting the breathtaking sunrises over the mist-covered coastal town of Astoria.  Feel the power of the mighty Columbia River through the sounds of the Columbia River Symphony’s interpretation of a Regatta-sized Pops concert, through the eyes of a young boy determined to experience a nautical race unlike any other.
